Notepad++ – Define a New Language

Notepad++ is a very powerful editor and it also have this flexibile to define new “languages”, or more precisely highlighting schemes.

Let’s go through an example of adding a new language for an iCal or .ics file. By the way, ICS is a global format for calendar files widely being utilized by various calendar and email programs including Google Calendar, Apple iCal, and Microsoft Outlook.

NB: If you do not have an iCal file, go to http://www.calendarlabs.com/ical-calendar-holidays.php to download one and view it using Notepad++.

  2. Go to ‘iCalendar’ and save this xml (userDefineLang_iCalendar.xml) file to your computer.

WordWeb – Install as a Portable App

WordWeb is one of my favourite app that I used quite frequently on a day to day basis. If you have the same problem as me in which my laptop at my workplace is without administration right, then the portable version is the way around it. Another advantage is of course the flexible of carrying it around in a flash drive if required.

The brief steps is as below:

  1. Download the WordWeb install from http://wordweb.info/free/
  2. Run the installer.
  3. During the installation process,  stop when you reached the “WordWeb Dictionary/Thesaurus Setup” point.
  4. Change the installation folder which in my case is “C:\Users\Steve\Programs” where ‘Steve’ is my Windows username.WordWeb Installed Location
  5. Click on the “Advanced Option” button and the “Install Options” box will appear.
  6. Click on the checkbox for the option labelled “Install as portable app (e.g. on USB drive)”.WordWeb Advanced Options
  7. Proceed with the remaining steps of the installation and you are done.

Rainlendar – Grid Calendar

Rainlendar has many customizable options which includes the skins. Personally I like to view 4 calendar months on my desktop as it gives me the visibility of tasks, events and appointments in the current and next 1-2 months.

mRemoteNG Slow Startup

In my Windows 7 desktop, mRemoteNG easily took more than 10 seconds to launch.

After bearing with this slow startup for some time, I finally decided to find the workaround or a fix to this problem.

A quick Google leads to the mRemoteNG forum and indeed, there are also others facing similar issue and a workaround is provided.

http://forum.mremoteng.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2106

The solution is to add the following lines of code to the end of mRemoteNG.exe.config file located in C:\Program Files (x86)\mRemoteNG or in the directory where mRemoteNG.exe is installed:

<runtime><generatePublisherEvidence enabled=”false”/></runtime>

Refer to the screenshot below:
